Honoring Others -- Teacher of The Year 2023-24 Each year the eight member clubs of the DeKalb Rotary Council honor local area Teachers and fellow Rotarians at its Awards Breakfast. This year our club's Teacher honoree is Karessa Carter, Media Specialist at Doraville United Elementary School (seen below, center). Ms Carter's passion is to inspire students' love of books and reading. She is also an avid seeker of new instructional technology to enhance the learning experience of students. We were honored to have the recipients of the last three years all together at the awards breakfast this year. Making Strides toward Prevention of Spina Bifida The Rotary Club of North Atlanta (RCNA) is partnering with Rotary clubs in Texas, North Carolina, and Addis Ababa on a Global Grant project in Ethiopia (Global Grant GG2240039). The project focuses upon women who have already had one child with spina bifida or anencephaly (serious birth defects known collectively as neural tube defects or NTDs), because these women have a 10X higher risk of having another child with an NTD. The chief cause of these defects is a dietary lack of inexpensive folic acid (also called vitamin B9). Providing these women with supplemental folic acid pills before they become pregnant should greatly reduce their chances of having another baby with an NTD. The project entails identifying and recruiting approximately 1,850 of these women at high risk; supplying them with one-a-day high-dosage vitamin B9 tablets; and then tracking the birth outcomes. The project is initially specified for a year, but the goal is to extend it for an additional four years. Recently 800,000 vitamin pills (a year's supply) were manufactured in India and shipped to a hospital in Addis for less than $5,000 USD. The accompanying photo shows our Ethiopian partners with the delivered shipment. The pills are being distributed to patients, and the project is now underway. Ethiopia has a relatively high incidence of NTDs, but spina bifida (caused by folic acid deficiency) is a global problem: an estimated 300,000 babies are affected each year. Many die before or at birth; those who survive often suffer from paralysis and incontinence, and shorter life spans due to complications. Survivors require lifelong special care, which burdens their families and society at large. There is burgeoning awareness within Rotary of the need to take action for prevention as well as care for spina bifida patients: this past spring, R.I. President Jennifer Jones visited a Spina Bifida clinic in Columbia. The upcoming January issue of Rotary magazine will feature a story about Rotary and NTDs. SERVICE for the benefit of FODAC Posted by B Bush Collaborating for a DAY OF SERVICE! September 11-17 of this year is Celebrate Community Week. John Hewko, the General Secretary and CEO of Rotary International wrote, “we’re encouraging Rotary and Rotaract clubs to partner with local Kiwanis, Lions, and Optimist clubs on a service project that will have a long-term impact in your community.” The Rotary Club of North Atlanta (RCNA) and the DeKalb Rotary Council got a head start on August 5th. For the past ten years, the RCNA has hosted a used medical equipment collection day for FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children – a local non-profit that gathers, refurbishes and distributes wheelchairs, hospital beds, and other medical gear large and small to those in need). This year we were joined by a local Lions club as well as many other DeKalb Rotary Council Clubs and Rotaract clubs. Volunteers at the event teamed up to drive to locations in the greater metro area. A total of 57 volunteers consisting of representatives from seven Rotary clubs (North Atlanta, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Emory Druid Hills, South DeKalb, Stone Mountain and Atlanta Metro), the North DeKalb Lions Club, and Rotaractors from Atlanta Metro and Sao Paulo, Brazil comprised ten teams. These teams accomplished a total of 35 pickups gathering home medical equipment and supplies from the very generous donors of Atlanta. Jon Yaeger, current Club Program Chair and past president of the RCNA, and former chair of the DeKalb Rotary Council joined the local Lions Club in 2019 in-part to foster opportunities for the two volunteer organizations to collaborate and partner on projects. He is serving as president of the North DeKalb Lions Club this year. This project is the first collaboration of the year between RCNA and the ND Lions. According to Yaeger, “partnering with other Rotary clubs and volunteer organizations is an excellent way to bring new energy into a club, as well as to multiply the good we can do through service projects. It also helps to recapture some of the energy and enthusiasm that dissipated during Covid, while exemplifying the Rotary 4-Way Test.” and motto of Service above Self. Honoring Service Above Self Exemplary Service Award Recipients Each year the DeKalb Rotary Council offers its eight member clubs the opportunity to honor and recognize teachers and fellow rotarians for their exemplary service. This year the Rotary Club of North Atlanta honored the following well deserving individuals for their ongoing work to improve the lives of others. Ms Sanna Sallah a 3rd grade teacher at Doraville United Elementary was chosen as our "Teacher of the Year". Ms Sallah was born in The Gambia, West Africa the youngest of 8 children. Her father died when she was only 6. Her mother raised the family on her own and was a strong advocate for education of her children and many other children in the community. Once she finished high school Ms Sallah moved to the United States to join three of her brothers and to go to college in Atlanta where she studied marketing management. After graduation she went into business for herself. Her initial experience in education was as a substitute teacher of special needs/extremely disabled children. This is where she discovered her calling as a teacher. Ms Sallah is extremely dedicated to her students and is highly regarded by her colleagues as a woman of integrity. She is a dedicated mother of two beautiful daughters. PP Jon Yaeger, President Mike Emanuele, Sanna Sallah, Teacher of the Year, Jodie Cohen (last year's Teacher of the Year recipient and 3rd grade cohort partner with Ms Sallah), and Dr Jesse Berger, Principal , Doraville United Elementary Dr Ralph Peeler, past president of the North Atlanta Rotary Club 2015-16, received the “Show Rotary Cares” award for his ongoing leadership of the 5-year project to reduce the Spina Bifida birth defect in Ethiopia, and his Herculean perseverance with the RF Global Grant preparation and involved process, including the fundraising efforts needed to fund this long term project. The grant is now on the brink of being approved by the Rotary Foundation. This, along with District matching funds, will quadruple the funds we are raising for the project! The five-year project goal is $250,000. Thank you Dr Peeler for your ongoing service and Congratulations! Jon joined North Atlanta Rotary in 1994 and has served in various leadership capacities in the club including as Club President 2014-2015. During his presidential year he won the prestigious Sheffield Leadership Award from the District. In 2015-16 Jon served as the DeKalb Rotary Council Chair. Among a wide array of service, Jon is very active in health prevention and treatment programs including his ongoing efforts with various public health initiatives and collaborative efforts to bring individuals and organizations together for more inclusive service delivery, local & global. Currently Jon's efforts have been primarily directed toward working with Dr Peeler on the 5-year project to reduce the birth defect Spina Bifida in Ethiopia and supporting the pending RF Global Grant. A very Successful Collection Event for FODAC! FODAC Collection Event -- Once again, a SMASHING SUCCESS! 63 volunteers came together for the benefit of others in our community - Thank You to each and every one! On August 6, 2022 we held the 9th annual collection event for FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children) and it was an overwhelming success by any standard! 63 volunteers consisting of Rotarians, Rotaractors, Lions, family and friends from North Atlanta (15 vols), Emory Druid Hills (8 vols), Brookhaven (6 vols), Dunwoody (11 vols), Stone Mountain (1 vol), Tucker (1vol), South DeKalb (2vols), and Atlanta Metro (5vols) Rotary Clubs, along side (11vols) Atlanta Metro and Atlanta Rotaractors, and North DeKalb and Atlanta Arirang Lions (2 vols) gathered for breakfast and organized into 14 teams on the patio of the 57th Fighter Squadron Restaurant in Chamblee. Volunteers provided 2 box trucks, 4 high roof vans, 3 regular vans, 5 pickup trucks and 5 trailers, along with several SUVs to make 44 home medical equipment pickups from donors in downtown Atlanta to Roswell, to Milton, to Lawrenceville to Stone Mountain. Rotaractors from Atlanta Metro and Atlanta Rotaract Clubs - Thank you for all that you did! This year a hot breakfast, snacks, sandwiches and drinks were prepared and provided by volunteers from the Emory Druid Hills Rotary Club and Atlanta Metro Rotaract Club. Many thanks to all the volunteers, in particular PP Manoj Barot (Emory Druid Hills Rotary) and PP Natalie Barot (Atlanta Metro Rotaract) for organizing these efforts and volunteers. What a fantastic upgrade of support for all the volunteers on this hot day in August. You kept us hydrated and nourished! Celebrating 60 years of Rotary! The Rotary Club of North Atlanta, formerly the Rotary Club of North DeKalb turned sixty this year! WOW! On July 16, 2022 we celebrated the Club's 60th Anniversary along with our 2021-22 Rotary year accomplishments under President Christopher Drew, and the induction of our new 2022-23 administration under President Mike Emanuele. Sweep the Hooch March 2022 On Saturday, March 26th volunteers from the Rotary Club of North Atlanta and the Chamblee Charter High school Interact Club came together with volunteers from the broader community to join in the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper's "Sweep the Hooch" cleanup event. Rotarians and family members, Interactors and community members gathered at two local cleanup sites: Murphy-Candler Park and Lake site and the Peachtree Greenway site. With the generous hours of service given, the waterways, trails and parks are more pristine and beautiful for Spring! Projects for the Homeless Shelter Support for the Homeless For the past twenty or so years volunteers from the Rotary Club of North Atlanta have provided service for the homeless men downtown at the downtown shelter. This year was no different. At our recent Club meeting we created 100 goodie bags for the men at the shelter. Each bag included zip lock bags, pairs of socks, hand warmers, hand wipes, masks, and a note from the Rotary club. We distributed these goodies at the shelter on Thursday, February 24th when we also deliver 100 dinners and 100 bag lunches we made that day. A couple of our volunteers stayed over night as chaperones for those lucky few homeless that were able to stay indoors this year. Rotarians Don and Mike were on duty throughout the night. Other homeless men stay in some 70 tents assembled on the grounds. Club members and guests after packing up the 100 Goodie Bags. Thank you! Holiday Service 2021 Helping out those in Need this holiday season! Once again North Atlanta Rotary served our community in various ways this holiday season. Here's a couple of examples from service done on Saturday, December 18, 2021. With the help of family and the CCHS Interact Club, rotarians volunteered to "Ring the Bell" for the Salvation Army in front of the Chamblee WalMart. We had young and old represented with grandkids, CCHS Interactors, to grandparents! the youngest: Jack and Emmy these two sang the whole time they were out front bell ringing and garnered much praise! Grateful to have Leslie and Mark in their special Christmas sweaters to support the efforts! Unfortunately we forgot to take any photos of the haul we delivered -- it included lots of clothing items, coats, boots and some fun things like nail polish, candy, a tablet, basketball hoop, crystal maze game, some developmental games, books, a bicycle and WalMart gift certificates for the Parents. We hope the families that received these gifts will have a very Merry Christmas this year! Dictionaries for 3rd & 4th Graders at Cary Reynolds Once again NAR Club provided Dictionaries to the students of Cary Reynolds Elementary School in Doraville. Because of COVID and remote learning we were not able to deliver the dictionaries to the 3rd graders in the 2020-21 school year, so this year we delivered dictionaries to the school for both the current 3rd and 4th graders. Although the students were back in the classroom, due to COVID Delta variant concerns, we were not able to go into the classrooms to deliver the dictionaries as we have in the past. WOW, what an Event! Posted on Nov 07, 2021 Another very successful Whiskies of the World (WOW) event was accomplished last evening with the help of our superb volunteers! By all accounts the participants had a great time and the volunteers were stellar. Special thanks go to NAR PPs Nathan Aberson and Ralph Sims for their outstanding organizing leadership and volunteer support. The students will learn about peace initiatives and strategies during the Fall Semester, and then bring them to life in their respective schools during the Spring Semester. We look forward to hearing about their accomplishments in this program and all their other service projects, some of which we hope to partner in with volunteers and/or funding. FODAC July 2021 FODAC Collection Event -- a SMASHING SUCCESS! On July 31st 2021 we held the 8th annual collection event for FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children) and it was a SMASHING success by any standards! Rotarians and friends from North Atlanta, Dunwoody, Stone Mountain, Tucker, Emory Druid Hills, and Atlanta Metro Rotary Clubs, along side Atlanta Metro Rotaract Club and Atlanta Arirang Lion's Club members gathered for a light breakfast and organizing on the patio of the 57th Fighter Squadron Restaurant in Chamblee. After event coordinator and North Atlanta Rotary (NAR) Club Past President Ralph Sims divided us into our respective groups and gave us our maps of pick up locations, we disbursed into the community to collect an estimated $318,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies! The largest haul yet for this event. Many thanks go to our event coordinator Ralph Sims for his tireless efforts to organize us and all of the volunteers who worked so hard on this very hot day, and to the community members who so generously donated these items to FODAC for refurbishment and redistribution before being distributed back out to those in need. Several motorized scooters, hospital beds, electric and manual wheel chairs, walkers, canes, and various medical supplies were among the items collected in all of the donated vans, trucks and trailers. Thank you to the 57th Fighter Squadron Restaurant for use of their patio for breakfast and their back parking lot for our staging area. It truly took a village, and we are grateful to everyone who participated, and to the support of the communities from downtown Atlanta to Roswell, to Milton, to Lawrenceville to Stone Mountain. Earth Day -- Cleaning the Hooch For Earth Day we participated in another event with the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper to clean up a branch of the Peachtree Creek. We were part of a much larger group of 40 or so, and spread out along the creek bed, so no "action photos" were captured. However we had Don Millen and Tana Guan each falling into the creek and getting soaked, and Nathan hauling a lot of the larger trash to the dumpsters for the rest of us. Sweep the Hooch! On Saturday, August 29, 2020 we had a fun time volunteering for the 10th Annual Chatahoochee RiverKeeper's "Sweep the Hooch no trash Saturday" project at the Proctor Creek site. We joined several other groups here making up a force of about 40 people and we picked up a ton of trash, it's sad to say. Special thanks to Nathan Aberson for organizing us, and Fazle Khan, Don Millen, Susan Kalus, Barbara Bush and special guest star Joan McGowen for spending your Saturday morning in the creek! This year the "Sweep the Hooch" event at all the many sties around Atlanta had a total of 1064 volunteers. On this one Saturday morning we removed 54,358 lbs of trash and 19,288 lbs of recyclables. Folks, that's a lot of trash in our creeks and rivers. This was up 10,000 lbs from last years' haul. We can do better than this people -- STOP littering! Spurgeon Richardson Memorial Bench Dedication On Thursday, January 9, 2020 the Rotary Club of North Atlanta dedicated a bench at the Ashford Dunwoody Cowart Family YMCA in honor of Spurgeon Richardson, a long time Rotarian and past President and CEO of the Atlanta Convention and Visitor's Bureau. One recent Saturday morning Rotarians, along with family and friends from eight (8) Rotary Clubs and one (1) Rotaract Club came together to disburse into the community collecting home medical equipment for refurbishment and re-distribution through FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children). The value of the items collected was estimated at over $250,000! This is absolutely fantastic for FODAC and its clients. Rotary International Convention Posted by B Bush We had Fun at and around the Rotary International Convention! With so many rotarians in town for the Rotary International Convention, North Atlanta Rotarians took the opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones. Several of us volunteered to meet and greet fellow travelers at the airport directing them to their luggage, pointing out transportation options and where they could get their Convention badge right there at the airport. Others spent time volunteering at various convention event venues around town, including a stint at the Braves Baseball Game on Thursday night and the NA Rotary Club co-sponsored Host Hospitality night in Decatur. We also held our very own reunion/social at the Millen's house on Friday night where several past rotarians and GRSP students were able to attend. Fun Service at the Interfaith Outreach Home Posted by B Bush This spring North Atlanta Rotarians reached out to the Interfaith Outreach Home (IOH), located in the Chamblee/Doraville area, to find out how we could help and support them. So far we've made a small donation and accomplished two service projects with a third one on the horizon. Our connections with IOH go back to the beginning of the home with builder Don Millen, a long time North Atlanta Rotary Club member and Past President, as well as with several other club members who have initiated club service projects over the years. Bush presenting a $500 check to IOHome In early April NARotarians stepped in to provide the evening meal for the Life Skills Class and their families. These classes bring in resources and share knowledge that help these families transition into more stable and healthier sustainable life styles. We were "channelling" our Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn personalities! Fun was had by all! Interfaith Outreach Home serves up to ten families at a time for up to 2 years each. It is an in-depth program providing safe and secure housing, many supportive resources, and time to transition (up to 2-years), while it requires mandatory saving and accountability from participants. The program provides guidance, multi-faceted life-skills trainings and mentors to formerly homeless families willing to participate in this very stringent program capable of breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Graduate families of this program transition into stable lives, often including home ownership made possible by the mandatory savings component of the program. The track record and success rate for families is impressive and encouraging. Kathy is retired from the Telecommunications industry and looks forward to involvement in Rotary service projects and fellowship opportunities. Fazle is a former Rotarian from Missouri as well as a former Roteract member and is excited about rejoining Rotary here in Atlanta. A native of Bangladesh, Fazle works in Public Health for the CDC. North Atlanta Rotarians Have Heart Posted by B Bush February was "Rotary Has Heart Month" and North Atlanta Rotarians participated in many areas of service sharing our hearts along the way. We started the month with a hands on project creating goody bags for 75 men at the Central Shelter in downtown Atlanta. Goodie Bag production line at lunch meeting That evening several Rotarians took and served a hot roasted chicken dinner with dessert, made sack lunches for the next day, and then stayed over night as chaperones. In the morning our volunteers gave out the goody bags and sack lunches to each man as they left for their day. The process of checking these men into the shelter and serving dinner gave each of the volunteers an opportunity to connect with individuals we might not otherwise, a very humbling experience. Our volunteer crew helped sort 6,850 lbs of food equal to approximately 4,469 meals. We took bouquets of roses, boxes of chocolate and orchid corsages for each participant. Don Millen was the "Bert Parks" host, Christopher Drew and Garry Guan played as escorts for the ladies, and Mary Frances Richardson, Kent Gipson and Barbara Bush were judges. It was a very touching event with the winner being crowned Ms. Brookhaven and eligible to participate in a regional pageant later this spring. This is part of a year-long literacy program partnering with the Ferst Foundation as part of "Get Georgia Reading", a statewide initiative to prepare students so they are ready to “read to learn” by 3^rd grade. Each month the book we read is also sent home with each student so they can continue reading at home. Early Reading Program at Woodward Elementary Posted by B Bush A ROTARY LITERACY SERVICE PROJECT Monthly Reading Circles for the Early Reading Project at Woodward Elementary are underway! (Above: Brookhaven Rotary President Bonnie Hardage reading A Scarecrow's Hat to Ms Gordon's Pre-K Class) The Rotary Club of Brookhaven invited the Rotary Clubs of North Atlanta, South DeKalb, Dunwoody, and Decatur, to join in an initiative to help Pre-K and Kindergarten students at Woodward Elementary be "reading to learn" by 3rd grade. With the support of a Rotary District Grant and partnering with the Ferst Foundation, together we are supporting this goal through book donations and reading monthly to 10 Kindergarten and 3 Pre-K classes at Woodward Elementary. Throughout this year, we'll donate more than 3,000 books to 248 students, read to 13 classes monthly and equip parents with book specific multi-lingual reading guides to use at home. This early reading project is helping students "learn to read" and learn to love to read, so that by the time they reach third grade they will be "ready to learn" through reading. Students at a 3rd grade level of reading by third grade are more likely to stay in school and become productive adults. Students who are not able to read at a third grade level by third grade often fall behind, are more likely to drop out of school and become at risk young individuals and ultimately more dependent on support from society. The reading program at Woodward Elementary is one of the collaborative programs coming together because of the awareness created by the "Get Georgia Reading" Campaign. The Get Georgia Reading Campaign is an unprecedented, population-focused collaboration of more than 100 public and private partners. These partners are working together to ensure that all children in Georgia read to learn throughout school and life. In 2009, nearly 70 percent of Georgia’s fourth graders were not proficient readers, despite abundant research on the importance of third-grade reading proficiency for school and lifelong success. In 2010, to ensure that all Georgia’s children reach this milestone, Gov. Nathan Deal made literacy his top education priority, and Georgia launched a statewide campaign supporting a range of efforts by public and private entities. From these efforts came the Get Georgia Reading Campaign, a long range comprehensive literacy program bringing together many partners in the community to support young readers in our community. Learning to read proficiently by the third grade is critical to not only the child and their future, but on a larger scale to our nation’s overall sustainability. By third grade the child should be capable to transition from Learning to Read, to Reading to Learn. Without the ability to read to learn, the child gets further and further behind and is at greater and greater risk for life long negative outcomes including disciplinary issues, dropping out of school, teenage pregnancy, and lower overall ability to provide for themselves. All of these factors have a tremendous impact on the individual and society as a whole. The Rotary Clubs of Brookhaven, North Atlanta, South DeKalb, Dunwoody, and Decatur are proud to be a positive influence and supporter for the young students at Woodward Elementary. Fun at the Atlanta Food Bank! Posted by B Bush On Thursday, November 10th North Atlanta Rotarians, family members and friends volunteered at the Atlanta Food Bank sorting and packing food for those in need. Atlanta Food Bank serves the homeless and working poor through some 800 partner agencies serving 29 Georgia Counties in the Greater Atlanta area. It is estimated that 1 in 4 Georgia kids live in food insecure households where from day to day there is uncertainty regarding the source of their next meal. An estimated 755,400 people in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia are served by the Atlanta Food Bank partner agencies. Many of those in need are Veterans and their families. Several of our volunteer Rotarians are Veterans as well. On the eve of Veteran's Day 2016 we said, "Thank you!" to all Veterans, and we participated in this evening of service in their honor. ...and then a time for Fellowship and nourishment! Serving at Nicholas House Posted on Sep 24, 2016 The Rotary Club of North Atlanta (RCNA) has enjoyed a strong relationship with Nicholas House that has lasted more than twenty years. Nicholas House is a shelter that specializes in helping homeless families to achieve self-sufficiency. It started in the halls of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in 1982; moved to a building behind the church, and then relocated to a much larger facility on Boulevard Avenue in metro Atlanta. Jon Yaeger, a RCNA Past President, served the program when it started in the church. (Former RCNA) Rotarian Juliet Reising also served as President of the Nicholas House Board; Juliet and her husband Lance, RCNA Treasurer, remain strong advocates and active volunteers for the shelter. On September 13th RCNA volunteers, under the leadership of Rotarian Lance Reising, participated in a hands on service event when several Rotarians planned, prepared, delivered and served dinner at the shelter house. In attendance were over 19 children from families that are now participating in the Nicholas House Program. Although this was one of the smallest groups we have served at the shelter, because three families had just been released from the program and moved on in their lives toward self-sufficiency, all together more than 35 individuals were served. For dinner residents enjoyed baked and fried chicken, pulled pork with BBQ sauce, green beans, potato salad, rolls, cookies, brownies, fruit pops, lemonade, ice tea and milk! North Atlanta Rotarians ready to serve! There was much joy, thankfulness, and fellowship shared between residents and Rotarians. North Atlanta Rotary is proud to be a long term community partner with Nicholas House serving the greater Atlanta community. So far this year, North Atlanta Rotary has provided over $1500 in support to Nicholas House. Nicholas House is the only shelter in Atlanta that provides housing to homeless families regardless of family makeup. They provide temporary housing while addressing the root causes of family homelessness so a family may never be homeless again. Nicholas House provides supportive services through their shelter on Boulevard Avenue, through their scattered-site apartment rapid re-housing program Homeless to Homes (H2H), and their newly launched New Horizons program for chronically homeless families. All families have up to two years of follow-up support after leaving direct services. Nicholas House understands that providing basic subsistence – food and shelter – is necessary but not sufficient to prevent most homeless families from becoming homeless again. Three main goals and three unique factors make Nicholas House an incredibly special place where positive, lasting change happens. 80% of the families served maintain their own housing a year or more after exiting the Nicholas House program. Multiple Tracks and Custom Solutions The Nicholas House two-tiered approach to solving homelessness is unique to Atlanta. No matter what level of need or stage of homelessness a family finds themselves in, they have a program to meet the family's unique situation. The New Horizons program is a housing first model for chronically homeless families with disabilities. These families have the greatest barriers, requiring longer time-frames and more support to become self-sufficient. These families have been homeless for an extended time and face significant challenges such as mental health issues, substance abuse, and physical disability. They place these families immediately into permanent support housing in apartments leased by Nicholas House – straight from street outreach teams or emergency shelters. Once families are settled in, case managers provide additional services that incorporate best practice approaches based on national research. These include harm reduction and motivational interviewing techniques. The NHI shelter located off Boulevard Avenue in the Grant Park area provides long-term care and assistance for families with no income. This shelter has room to house 12 homeless families, which includes accommodations for a family of 10. Their Homeless to Homes (H2H) apartment-based program is available to families with jobs who are past the need for a shelter environment but who still benefit from training, rental subsidy, time and assistance to rebuild their lives. Other shelters and agencies throughout the city rely on the H2H program to place their residents. The Nicholas House Home Again program provides initial support for homeless families with ENOUGH income to pay ongoing rent but without the larger initial funds required to obtain their own apartment. Nicholas House provides upfront support with application fees, utility and rental deposits, moving costs, initial months rent and other cost barriers to establishing housing. The family is then able to maintain housing long-term on their own based on their income. Through an After School Program, the school-age children receive counseling, encouragement, help with homework, and a chance to foster camaraderie and a love of learning that will last a lifetime. NHI Adult Education classes do the same for their parents. Nicholas House could not function without volunteers and donations. Over 6,000 individuals each year assist with every aspect of maintaining the agency and its programs. Daniela arriving at Harstfield Jackson International Airport being welcomed by Rotarians and family members of her three host Rotary Clubs: North Atlanta, Brookhaven and Tucker. Daniela is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Medellin where her father is a Rotarian. Daniela is currently in her third year of Industrial Engineering studies at the Unversidad de Los Andes. Once she completes her degree she will work toward her Master degree in Industrial Engineering or Finance. She will attend Oglethorpe University while in Georgia. Service Above Self Day for FODAC Posted by B Bush On Saturday, July 30, 2016 we had a fantastic turn out for our community service project benefiting FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children). Chris Brand, President and CEO of FODAC (and Stone Mountain Rotarian), expressed that we may have surpassed the monetary record for a single day collection! The estimated value of the collections for the day is $150,000! Chris stated, "this was the most successful collection drive of any volunteer group ever for FODAC!" All of this was possible because we were able to pick up several bulky and costly items such as hospital beds and motorized wheel chairs. In addition we picked up several manual wheel chairs, 3-in-1 seats, walkers, canes, and loads of unopened soft goods. Without each of our volunteers participating and providing their vehicles, trailers, trucks and muscle, this wouldn’t have been accomplished. Kudos all around! The concept here is that we helped by volunteering to pick up these items (no longer needed by one family) which in turn defrays costs for FODAC so they can then provide these items (newly refurbished) for free, to persons (in another family) who do need them. We helped extend every charitable dollar contributed to FODAC by providing our man, woman and kiddo power and resources for this project! A very large and special thank you goes to Ralph Sims for his leadership and on going coordination of the project! He did a darned good job “herding us cats!” Congratulations Ralph on this massively successful service project. Most of the volunteers and Dachshund Rev Duke, gathering after our breakfast social and before hitting the road for a day of service. The numbers: We had seven (7) Rotary Clubs, one Rotaract Club and FODAC represented and providing a total of 46 people who participated in this day of service! Many thanks to the North Atlanta Rotaract Club, and the Rotary Clubs of Brookhaven, South DeKalb, Tucker, Sylhet Sunshine (of Bangladesh), Stone Mountain, Duluth and of course, North Atlanta. Congratulations to all for a job well done! NAR Scholarship Program a Growing Success Posted by B Bush In it's second year, the North Atlanta Rotary Scholarship Program is a smashing success with a total of $7,000 given to four deserving students. For the first time NAR was able to give three 2016 graduating Chamblee Charter High School seniors each a $2,000 scholarship. The deserving recipients were Duncan Carel, Christopher Waters and Sebastian Rodriguez. In addition, we gave for the first time, a $1,000 scholarship to Kingston Handley, a matriculating college sophmore and our top 2015 CCHS scholarship recipient. Miracle on the Greeen! Posted by Jonathan R. Yaeger on Oct 04, 2014 The Rotary Club of North Atlanta (RCNA) held its annual golf fundraiser on September 29^th at the Trophy Club of Atlanta. Rev. John Strickland delivered the invocation. A 90% chance of rain was predicted for that date, and it rained in nearby Sandy Springs for most of the day. Although rain was heavy within a mile or two of the venue, and there was a bit of “Scottish mist” from time to time, the golfers enjoyed a dry course for the entire event. It was a minor miracle for a major good cause. Fisher Funeral Care was the sole Gold sponsor. Silver sponsorships were contributed by Cunningham & Associates; Horizon Staffing; A-R-T & Associates; J. Snowy Night Shelter Posted by Ralph Sims on Feb 13, 2014 Well, we beat mother nature!!! In spite of her, four hearty North Atlanta members (Don Millen (and a friend of his name Delante from Sandersville, Georgia), Jim Greco, Nathan Aberson and Ralph Sims) braved the roads and elements and successfully made it down to the Central Presbyterian Church a nd The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to feed the homeless on Wednesday night. We fed approximately 95 homeless men on what is probably going to be the worst night of the year. Most of them were VERY appreciative as usual. Travel was actually very easy both ways because there was no one on the roads. A far as I know, neither car slipped at all on the roads. A great thanks to all of them and also to Don and Kent for purchasing and getting the food down there on Tuesday night. That was a very important and smart move on their part. She gave North Atlanta Rotary her perspective on the cultural history of China and the evolution of modern day China. 2011 North Atlanta Rotary Golf Tournament Posted by Michael C. Emanuele on Oct 04, 2011 The Golf Tournament held Thursday September 29th was a huge success. We raised over $9000 that will be put into our charitable foundation to be used to fund our GRSP students and our many other philanthropic activities. It did not hurt that the weather was a perfect 10 and the Heritage Golf course was in great shape. Over 60% of our membership contributed to the success of the Tournament and special recognition needs to be made of Emily Pritchett who collected a ton of raffle prizes, and to Mary Frances Richardson who ran a flawless Silent Auction. Thanks to all who played, volunteered during the tournament day, donated prizes and participated in the Auction. A special thanks must also be made to Bill McLaughlin who was very generous with his wallet during the auction. Bike MS September 17th-18th Posted by Jim Greco on Sep 18, 2011 Our own Rev. John Strickland's experience with the Bike MS event in Callaway Gardens this past weekend My wife Brenda, who has MS, was the last one on our team to make it up the last big hill on day two. We had all gathered at a gas station convenience store so that we could ride across the finish line together. Some were getting antsy to go ahead, and I said, "If you want to go now, that's OK, but I am going to wait for Brenda." One of the team leaders said, "No, Brenda is one of the reasons we are riding, we will wait and all ride in together." Then, Matthew Tallman, our team captain and a strong rider, said, "I will go back down and find her and escort her." He did just that and we all rode across the finish line together. I love our team and that they put the whole ride into perspective. I am most grateful. Our team raised approximately $40,000.00 for a great cause! I really loved having Julie and Tracy ride with us. There were some challenges with setup but the food was outstanding. Barbq sliders, salmon and calamari were three I remembered. Luckily I had to leave before dessert. Be sure to give Lou feedback as requested or alternative sites to investigate. The program was by our own Jeff Lovejoy, who gave a thoughtful and entertaining presentation on Setting Goals & Objectives. Valentine's Happy Club Dance Big Success Posted by Tim Ramsey on Feb 13, 2011 This past Saturday, February 12, the Club held its annual Valentine's Day celebration in conjunction with the Happy Club Dance sponsored by the Cowart Family Ashford Dunwoody Branch of the Metropolitan Atlanta YMCA. Close to 300 developmentally disabled individuals and their care givers attended the event. A good time was had socializing, eating, dancing and taking pictures. Special thanks to Mike E, Hans, Ralph S, President Lou, Sandra, Cherie and her wonderful husband Marcos for all of their help at the Y-Happy Club Dance. The opportunity will be open to all Rotarians worldwide for the day of 23 February 2011. To be eligible for the double recognition credit, Rotarians must be registered in Rotary’s secure Member Access section of www.rotary.org. On Thursday, August 8 we will have NO MEETING. It will be replaced by the exciting Summer Outing to be held on Saturday, August 10 at Lake Burton from 12 to 6 PM. This will be a Family Outing (the type of outing many of you have asked for) so please bring your entire family and enjoy getting to know our members socially. Kent and his mother (Janet) will be graciously hosting the event for our club. More than likely everyone will be asked to bring a covered dish. Kent will address this tomorrow. On Tuesday, August 13, Ruxanda Renita, our new GRSP student arrives at the airport. We currently have a scheduling conflict with our August Board Meeting. On Thursday, August 15, Georgia State University, Department of Political Science Professor Rashid Naim will be speaking on “Sharia Law”. On Thursday, August 22, Ruxanda Renita will be welcomed and make an Introductory Presentation so we can learn more about her and vice-versa. On Thursday, August 29, Emory Professor, Dr. Faisal Khose will be speaking on the “Benefits and Side Effects of Imaging”. These are some outstanding speakers so please make an effort to invite Prospective Members to hear them.
